Another review! this one is from me (TJ) though.
So i got this book a
while back for my birthday from Soup (love you!) and i wasn’t sure how it was going to go. I was scared i wouldn’t like it because Jace, Clary, Simon, Magnus, Alec, Izzie and other main characters in the mortal instruments are only background characters or not even ‘seen’ in the book at all (I mean no Herondale’s as a main character, what kind of monster does that?!).
But finally i’ve finished it and i have the full low down for all you guys who were to scared to read it…
Author: Cassandra Clare
Genre: Modern day fantasy
In a kingdom by the sea…
In a secret world where half-angel warriors are sworn to fight demons, parabatai is a sacred word. A parabatai is your best friend. Parabatai can be everything to each other- but they can never fall in love.
Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter. She lives for battle. Alongside her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, she patrols Los Angeles, where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries- the most powerful supernatural creatures- teeter on the edge of war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries are found murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held by the faerie Courts. All they have to do is solve the murders within two weeks…and before the murderer targets them.
Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels reveals more secrets. What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents- and can she bear to know the truth?
I went into this book not knowing what to expect and my (not so humble) opinion after reading it is it is Cassie’s best book to date. I thought City of Heavenly Fire was my favourite book, but Lady Midnight has one upped it in plot, suspense, action, surprises and characterisation (Jace is still #1 Bae though).
I just…I thought i couldn’t love the setting or characters of Cassie’s books more than i loved the one ones in the mortal instrument but the Blackthorns are now my fictional family and Cristina and Emma are my fictional best friends.
Characters: Emma is fierce and intelligent and loyal and as much as i loved the mortal instruments Clary got on my nerves. Emma is the complete opposite, she could be Jace’s sister from all her hilarious one liners and amazing fighting skills, she is independent, fierce and loyal.
Julian is beautiful. Instead of Jace’s (incredibly hot) in your face attractiveness and arrogant attitude Julian’s beauty is quiet and his emotions are shown more on the surface. He is a father figure to his 4 younger siblings (the twins Livvy and Ty as well as Dru and Octavian) and takes care of them as well as practically running the institute for his uncle.
I’m pretty much in love with all the characters to be honest, Christina is kind and funny, Malcolm is almost as fabulous as Magnus (but in a…special way) and Diana is a motherly figure.
Plot: Oh my God, there were so many plot twists and !!!! moments in this book, moments when i was just like..What? and moments where i literally drew breath and clapped my hands while internally screaming…
The plot was a lot more sophisticated then Cassie Clare’s other books and I found it a lot more dark and interesting as well.
My only negative for this book is you can’t just read little bits of it at a time, if you want the ‘full experience’ you pick it up and then don’t put it down till you’ve finished it, otherwise there is too much suspense and too many plot twists to keep track of. Also i want more main character Herondales…
Okay that’s all for now…
Hope you enjoyed! Have you read Lady Midnight? What did you think? What’s your favourite book by Cassandra Clare?
Keep the Nerdling Army Strong
P.S. Jemma is my new favourite ship
